Columbia University’s Sakıp Sabancı Center for Turkish Studies offers a limited number of Dissertation Writing Fellowships each academic year. Awards are designed to enable PhD students with dissertation projects in any field of Turkish Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences to bring their dissertation research and writing to completion.
Eligibility is limited to students in their sixth and seventh years in a Columbia GSAS PhD Program, who have made demonstrable progress on their dissertation chapters and plan to distribute and defend during the awarded academic year.
SAKIP SABANCI DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP

Columbia University’s Sakıp Sabancı Center for Turkish Studies invites applications for a Dissertation Writing Fellowship for the 2024-25 academic year. This award is designed to enable PhD students with dissertation projects in any field of Turkish Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences to bring their dissertation research and writing to completion. Eligibility is confined to current Columbia University students in their fifth and sixth years in the PhD Program, who have made demonstrable progress on their dissertation chapters and plan to distribute and defend by the end of their seventh year. Eligible students are asked to submit an application (consolidated into a single PDF-file) consisting of the following documents to Astrid Benedek ([email protected]):
(1) A cover letter (please include the names of the faculty members on your prospectus committee and the date of your last GSAS Dissertation Progress Meeting)
(2) A research proposal (max. 5 pages, 1.5 spaced, 1-inch margins)
(3) A research schedule & timeline for completion (max. 1 page, 1.5 spaced, 1-inch margins)
(4) A short CV (no more than 3 pages)
In addition, candidates should to arrange two letters of recommendation, one being from their dissertation supervisor, to be sent directly to the email address given above. The letter from the dissertation supervisor should indicate progress made on dissertation research and writing, significance of the dissertation topic, and confirm the feasibility of the candidate’s schedule for completion by the end of the 7th year.
The submission deadline for the application and support letter is March 18, 2024.
