The Sakıp Sabancı Center for Turkish Studies at Columbia University offers a limited number of Dissertation Writing Fellowships each academic year. These fellowships, awarded either for one semester or for one academic year, provide support to PhD students working on dissertation projects in any field of Turkish Studies within the Humanities and Social Sciences, helping them complete their research and writing.


Eligibility: The fellowship is open to Columbia GSAS PhD students in their fifth or sixth year who have made significant progress on their dissertation chapters and plan to distribute and defend their dissertation by the end of their seventh year.


Application Instructions


Eligible students must submit a single PDF file containing the following materials to [email protected]

  1. Cover Letter: Include the names of the faculty members on your prospectus committee and the date of your last GSAS Dissertation Progress Meeting.
  2. Research Proposal (maximum 5 pages, 1.5 spaced, 1-inch margins).
  3. Research Schedule & Timeline for Completion (maximum 1 page, 1.5 spaced, 1-inch margins).
  4. CV (maximum 3 pages).
  5. Two Letters of Recommendation
    Arrange for two letters, including one from your dissertation supervisor, to be sent directly to the above email address. The supervisor’s letter should address the candidate’s progress on dissertation research and writing, the significance of the dissertation topic, and confirm the feasibility of completing the dissertation by the end of the seventh year.
