THE ALHAMBRA AT THE CROSSROADS OF HISTORY

BOOK TALK BY EDHEM ELDEM (COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY)

Discussants

ABIGAIL BALBALE (NYU), IHEB GUERMAZI (COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY)

Moderated by A. TUNÇ ŞEN (COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY)

The Alhambra at the Crossroads of History offers an in-depth examination of the perception and reception of the Alhambra by Oriental travelers and intellectuals. Contrary to the conventional view of the Alhambra as merely a target of the Western gaze, this study explores the experiences and reflections of "Oriental" visitors to the monument. Through a multi-layered analysis, the book sheds light on the complex interactions and perceptions involving a variety of actors, including Westerners, Spaniards, Andalusians, Arabs from the Maghreb, "Turks," and Christian and Muslim Arabs from the Mashreq.
