The Artist’s Eye, The Historian’s Gaze: Ottoman Pavilions at World’s Fairs

This panel discussion and reception inaugurates The Pavilion, a mural by Baris Gokturk (MFA, 2020) being installed in Butler Library (Rooms 211 and 602) and based on Prof. Zeynep Celik’s book Displaying the Orient: Architecture of Islam at Nineteenth-Century World's Fairs. The participants will be discussing where and how scholarly and artistic practices merge and diverge, situating the artwork in the broader context of Orientalism, following the fortieth anniversary of Edward Said’s groundbreaking book.
