The Long Struggle for Human Rights and Democracy in Turkey: The Role of Kurds

Speaker: Fatma Müge Göçek, Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan

Followed by a documentary screening of “Seni Unutmayacağız” with remarks by Nazenin Elçi.

 

After historicizing human rights and democracy into the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic, the talk traces episodes of violence that emerge throughout Turkish history as social actors attempt to put these ideals into practice with special attention to the experience of Kurds throughout Republican history.
